I've learned one thing: don't trust your taste buds early after weight loss surgery. Everything is so sweet and strong because of heightened taste buds. I tried 8th Continent Light Soy Milk shortly after my procedure, and didn't care too much for it. However, a year later, and it was TERRIFIC!
Actually it has taken me a long time to acquire a taste for milk again. I've been "anti-milk" for so long after my wls because I believe that many people dump from it. It also stalls weight loss. Now that I am on maintenance though, I will use a milk alternative (hardly EVER do I use real skim milk) to make latte's.
The Sunday paper had coupons for 8th Continent Soy Milk. Being the spend thrift that I am, I thought it was a wonderful time to give this product another try. I purchased the Light Vanilla Soy Milk at Kroger for $1.79. Not too shabby since I knew I could take it to work and use it in my protein drinks (2 oz per drink, 6 oz of water). This is what I always do so that my shakes are creamier.
This afternoon I felt the need for a nice ice cold protein shake as it's hotter than blazes in my office! And the maintenance men have flipped the main switch so that I have no air, but heat only coming from my unit! I took the 8th Continent container out and noticed that it says "Lactose & Gluten Free". Wow, for us wls patients who developed lactose intolerance, this would be wonderful.
Now came the real test - - putting it to my lips and taking a drink. If you've had a bad tasting soy or other milk alternative, it will frighten you to take a big swig of anything other than milk. You never know what it will taste like! This did not exactly taste like milk. It was much sweeter, almost like a shake. It would take getting used to drinking just as it is, but then came the other test - - mixing in my protein shake.
I am enjoying my Click/Nectar Chocolate Truffle combo very much with my 8th Continent. It tastes much sweeter than normal, not as much of a coffee taste. The vanilla adds a nice flavor to the deep chocolate & espresso flavor. It also provides a richer consistency than just using water.
It is definitely worth a try. Here are the stats in 8 oz (1 cup):
Calories: 60
Fat: 2
Carbs: 5
Sugars: 5 *Keep in mind that I use 2 oz in my protein so I am not getting a full 5 g of sugar.
