They look like Doritos.  They taste like Doritos.  Don't worry, mom!  These are not Doritos!

But the taste sure would fool you!  Sorry I have not blogged about these sooner.  Truth is, I didn't want to get a bunch of formerly obese folks addicted to something that could possibly be a slippery slope.  But, I'm at that stage in MY journey where I can enjoy the occasional snack.  I picked these babies up months back when Nashville had their grand opening of Trader Joe's. And they are fairly inexpensive at just $1.99 a bag.   I scoured the store shelves for quite awhile to pick out the bariatric friendly items.  I lept out on a limb with this product.  At first, I was a little embarrassed or scared to show them to my "mentor" for fear that she would say "Those are horrible stats!"

Well...  my mentor and another long time wls friend (both are farther out from surgery than I am) came to visit.  We decided we would go to supper at the Mexican restaurant.  Then I 'fessed up...  I pulled out  my bag of TJ Spicy Soy & Flaxseed Chips and said, "Ok, girls...  I will show you what I found..."  and the rest is history.  I have come into the light and stopped hiding my little "find".  I've shared them witih others, both weight loss surgery folks and non bariatric "normal" folks.  The concensus is that these little chips are quite tasty and delicious.

Here is how I eat them.  Very occasionally, we do eat at a Mexican restaurant.  I take one serving (SEVEN CHIPS) and place them into a snack size baggie and slide them into my purse.  Once at the restaurant, the server always brings chips & salsa whether you ask for them or not.  Tim is able to eat the regular chips, and I pull out my little baggie and dump them onto a napkin (I try to be very discreet).  I dip and dip and dip into the salsa, taking very small bites of each chip so that I have enough to last my entire meal.

"How's the TASTE?"

I'm glad you asked.  Or, I'm glad I knew you would ask.  They are fantastic!  These have some kick to them, as they are spicy.  But my mom's friend who does not like hot food tried them the other day and did not have a problem with them being too hot.  The flavor is robust, yes that would be the best word.  Now, the texture is a bit different than regular tortilla or Doritos, which is one reason I like them.  Tortilla chips are very hard and have rough edges.  They tend to hurt my stomach.  However, flaxseed chips are soft.  They crumble and chew very easily, quickly, and still have a "snap" when you crunch into them.  The great thing is, due to the texture, you cannot tell when they are stale.  I have had the same bag of chips for several months now.  (That should give my mother a hint that she has nothing to worry about.  She's always anxious when I talk about foods that even have a hint of NORMAL).  I enjoy them very much WHEN I have them to enhance a meal, but they do not become my meal.
