We had a bonfire this fall, and I was craving s'mores! But, where can you find a sugar free marshmallow? La Nouba!
I never realized how much sugar were in regular marshmallows until I had weight loss surgery, which necessitated me learning how to read food labels! I al
ways heard that marshmallows and marshmallow cream was fat free, and better for you than a lot of sweet candies. One day after surgery, I wandered through the grocery store looking at labels of foods that I felt would be "ok". Wow! I about fell over with a heart attack on how many sugars are in 4 large marshmallows, nearly 20!! That would be enough to toss ya into a dumping episode! I have not touched those since, not even the package. Then I heard about La Nouba sugar free/low carb marshmallows. It sounded too good to be true! I had to try these just to see how they tasted. The ones I ordered were pink & white, oh they were pretty! But they did look just a tad bit strange when I put them on top of a sweet potato for my version of toasted yams! They did taste good, though. But, unfortunately, they got pushed to the back of the cupboard and were there for oh... 6 months? Maybe a year... and were hard as rocks cause I didn't seal up the bag too well.
A few months ago, I ordered a bag along with a few more items from an online store. They've been in my cupbard... untouched... I just didn't have any ideas as how to use them just yet. Last night we had a bonfire with our new patio fire pit, and I wondered... What would those La Nouba marshmallows toast up like? Would they just catch on fire? Would they brown/roast? Would they just poof! Vanish into thin air? I had never tried to roast them before. Let me just say, I stuck one on the end of my roasting stick (they are square so the perfect shape and size to fit on a quarter square of a graham cracker). I was careful not to stick it too close to the flames, and kept a close eye on it. Slowly they started to warm, and then turn a light brownish color. Then I swapped sides, toasting the other portion. On my graham cracker, I put just a tiny thin layer of Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Chocolate frosting (although I could have used some sugar free Valor Chocolate bar, I'm sure... but the thought didn't even cross my mind until today), then slid my toasted marshmallow on top. Oh it was glorious! (I did not cover the marshmallow with another graham). And, the coating started to set up just a bit which made it even more decadent in my opinion. I would definitely suggest that you try roasting your La Noubas at the next bonfire.... no one would even know that you were using something different unless they looked at the shape of your marshmallow. I did not miss the "real thing", nor was I tempted to eat the real marshmallows that I had picked up for members of my family who are not weight loss surgery patients or sensitive to sugar.
